Wine shipping boxes: how to choose the right carton

Wine bottles break when they touch each other or move around inside the box. Good wine shipping boxes deal with both: a snug fit, and something solid between the bottles.

Here is how to pick the right carton for cellar door sales, online orders or interstate freight. Everything below is made at our factory in Mount Barker, SA.

Wine shipping boxes by bottle count

Laydown or upright?

Laydown

Bottles lie flat. Looks great when the customer opens it, posts easily, and keeps the cork in contact with the wine on longer trips.

Upright

Bottles stand up. The standard carton for stock, pallets and bulk orders. Check the height limit: our upright cartons suit bottles up to 294 mm or 329 mm tall.

Wine shipping boxes: brown 2-bottle laydown mailer with divider

Why the divider matters

  • Step dividers in our laydown mailers hold 300 mm or 330 mm bottles in any mix.
  • Moulded pulp dividers in our RSC laydown cartons are fully recyclable and cradle each bottle.
  • Slotted cardboard dividers in the 6-bottle stand-up carton handle mixed bottle sizes, which suits bottle shops.
  • No divider needed: our 1, 2, 3 and 4-bottle shippers fold up around the bottles, with a double flap for extra strength.

Check your bottle size first

Most of our wine shippers suit standard bottles up to 330 mm high and 85 mm in diameter. Magnums need the magnum shipper (up to 375 x 110 mm), and gin bottles have their own range of sized laydown mailers.

Extra protection for long trips

For overseas or rough freight, use the 3-bottle international box in heavy-duty twin cushion board, or slip each bottle into a bubble bag (150 x 390 mm) before it goes in the box.

If you are posting wine, check Australia Post’s rules for sending alcohol first.

Custom wine boxes

If you want your winery’s logo on the box, or your bottle is an unusual shape, we make custom wine packaging with tailored inserts and printing, in runs that suit small producers.
